Recently, a US film studio won a case against my service provider, Teksavvy, to release over 2000 names and billing addresses to match to IP addresses they have linked to torrenting their films. Luckily I won't be included because the IP addresses are from before I started using them.
I would like to better protect myself and would like to know how best to do it. The main two browsers I use are chrome and Firefox. Most of my downloading and torrenting are done through firefox so I can use no script to block all the ads and popups. On Chrome I use Hola to access Hulu and US Netflix in Canada. My main router was given to my by Teksavvy via Bell, but I also have a second router plugged into the first to network all the game systems as the other one won't allow them to work together.
Here are my initial questions:
1) Can I use something as simple as Hola and be safe? Are apps/plugins safe enough?
2) Can someone explain Tor and its benefits?
3) Do I need to mask my router IP address too, or just the computers actually doing the downloading?
4) Is there anything else I should be aware of?
Thanks again, and glad to be part of the cgpeers community.
