Font Editor

Hi,

What program would you recommend for editing fonts?
And more importantly, what do you need to do after editing a font to save it as different one that can be installed alongside the original?

I'm using Windows and tried FontCreator 6 which is OK, but for the life of me I can't figure out what to change so the font is identified as a different font. I changed names, families, whatever, but for some it works for others it doesn't. It seems I haven't found the exact thing I need to change.
Plus, for some fonts after I save them from FontCreator and install them they don't appear in Photoshop, but they appear in some programs, like Wordpad in which they are grayed out although still usable apparently.

FontCreator 7 has another problem where it doesn't save all the glyphs that were in the font I edited.

It's driving me crazy!
